Hi parents and students,
This was shared with me by a colleague. If you are looking for something safe to do outside this weekend, consider checking out the Winterfest event that is being put on by the Urban Ecology Center and The Milwaukee Art Museum! There will sledding, snow tracking, hiking, snow science, and more being done in a socially distanced manner. Hi parents and students,
I hope you are all doing well! Today I wanted to discuss some facts about the COVID-19 vaccine. In the near future you are going to be able to receive yours if you choose to, but there has been some inaccurate information going around about the vaccine. First off, the COVID-19 vaccine will not give you COVID. Some vaccines we receive have the dead virus in them to help build immunity, so you may experience some symptoms of that illness. The COVID vaccine does not have any of the dead virus in it. You may have symptoms of a fever, fatigue, or body aches, but that is simply your body building up it's immune system. The COVID 19 vaccine will not alter your DNA. I actually do not know where this even came from. It is an mRNA vaccine and what it does is trigger proteins in our body to start an immune response. The vaccine never enters the nucleus of the cells in your body (that is where DNA is kept), so you cannot and will not have any changes to your DNA. Lastly, there are concerns that the virus was rushed through production and to the general population. Although the vaccine got to us quickly, it still had to pass through the FDA for approval. They would not let something go public that was ultimately going to harm us and they knew it. I highly encourage you all to get vaccinated if you are able. This is the step in the right direction in ending this pandemic once and for all. Hi students and families,
I hope you are all doing well and the start to this semester has not had many bumps in the road. I'm writing today in regards to a potential return to school this year (I do not know if we are or will, but I like to be prepared. If and when we return I want to make sure you all have everything you need on file in case something comes up at school where you may need any type of treatment from me. In the "Important Forms" section there are many forms in there that can be submitted to me. I highly recommend that you all fill out the protocol medication form. Without it you cannot get any type of medicine from me. Again, I do not know what the status of our return is. This just serves as a reminder to get all the forms taken care of on the chance we do return. Have a great week! Hi students and families,
You are already aware about the MPS Stop Grab and Go food sites, but I wanted to share an updated that began on January 4th. A free dinner will be provided with breakfast and lunch now as well as free produce bags on every Thursday. I have attached the link here with more information. Please feel free to reach out to me if you have any questions though! Have a great rest of the week! Hello students, I hope you had a wonderful break and took the time to relax and recharge for the second half of the year! There is a bit of information I want to share with you all, which I will be posting below. Outside of the information I share, please let me know if there is anything else I can do for you. You can always email me at [email protected] or we can set up a time to meet on google meet. Just know that I am here for you if needed! Mobile COVID-19 testing site at Obama High School! At home COVID-19 testing kit! Gov. Tony Evers, together with the Wisconsin Department of Health Services (DHS), today announced a new contract with Vault Medical Services that will add an additional tool to the Wisconsin COVID-19 testing toolbox starting today. At-home COVID-19 saliva collection kits will be available to everyone who lives in Wisconsin, with or without symptoms, at no cost. “We believe that anyone in Wisconsin who needs to be tested for COVID-19 should have access to a test, and I’m proud of our statewide testing efforts throughout this pandemic,” said Gov. Evers. “We also know that getting to a health care provider or a community testing site isn’t easy for everyone, and that’s why we are excited to offer this new option to make testing even more accessible for folks across our state.” Wisconsinites can order a collection kit online and have it shipped to their home. The kit will include detailed instructions on how to collect the saliva, which includes a video call with a testing supervisor through Vault Medical Services, and ship it back via UPS dropbox to the lab for processing. That is all for now! I will be back to posting regularly this week. Have a great day!! Hi parents and students,
I wanted to share this mental health resource available to you virtually from the DSD and DHHS. The Community Café is a meeting space for parents guardians, caregivers and others to meet and learn about what is important to you and your community. Participation in this will allow you to engage with a therapist and discuss mental health. It is available on December 16th at two times, so you can choose what is convenient to you. Click here for more information on this event! Hi parents and students,
I wanted to share a great website with you in regards to cooking at home. Budgetbytes is a site that has a large selection of meals to make that are relatively low in cost. The best part is that not only are they cheap, they are easy to make as well! The spices required are also pretty common, so you may have that sitting around already. Check it out here and let me know what you think! Have a great week! Hi students,
Today I wanted to share with you some information to help you spark some ideas for a workout at home. With gyms being limited and/or shutdown, we have been forced to be creative in our home to get some exercise in. With little to no equipment available, what is it that we can do? Well with just your body and maybe a chair that you have around your house, you have a numerous amount of exercises you can perform. For example we have push ups, sit ups, squats, lunge, jumping jacks, burpees just to name a few. I wanted to share the following link from Runner's World as it lists more and provides a GIF and explain on how they can be performed. I suggest taking two or three exercises from each category (upper, core, lower) and performing 8-20 reps each and resting as needed between each movement. For example it may look like this: 8 burpees 8 push ups 12 squat 12 bridges 20 mountain climbers :60 plank hold rest 2 minutes and repeat Let me know if you take a look and make up your own! www.runnersworld.com/training/g23341982/best-bodyweight-exercises/ Hey students,
Today I wanted to talk to you about another healthy alternative you can add into your diet to help satisfy a craving, while getting in quality nutrients and less empty calories. If you're anything like me, you may get a sweet tooth from time to time. That is okay, but if it becomes a habit this can be detrimental to our health. Sweets such as candy, cakes, donuts, pies, etc. are typically very high in sugar content, fat, and empty calories. An alterative to eating the aforementioned is dried fruit. There is large number of fruits you can purchase in dried form and they are easy to carry on the go. These are a great source of vitamins, fiber, and antioxidants (as are all regular fruits, but they aren't as easy to carry on the go). Dried fruits can help control blood sugar, cholesterol, maintain blood pressure, and decrease inflammation in the body. Be careful though - as it may be easy to eat more than the serving size due to how small the fruits are. Be sure to always read the labels that are on your foods! If you are looking for more information on dried fruits check out this article: https://www.healthline.com/nutrition/dried-fruit-good-or-bad#TOC_TITLE_HDR_11 Enjoy! Hi students and families,
I wanted to share a resource with you regarding living with a person who has been diagnosed with COVID-19. It serves as a valuable tool to give you an idea on how long to quarantine. Hope this serves valuable for you! |
